That said, story companions do add a certain flavour to your adventures and are totally okay to finish the game with. But it's not that critical if you really like playing with a custom party. The only thing that you'll miss will be party banter and some dialogue interjections or specific reactions. (For the latter you will have to include them in your party at specific points in the game and travel with them to certain locations but it's totally doable even if it requires a litlle bit of metagaming.) So if you create a custom party you will still be able to exhaust most dialogue options with Story Companions and even do all of their quests.
